About the Event

This walking tour will begin at St Bartholomew the Great’s, a 12th century church which began its life as a monastic site. One wall of the cloister survives as a reminder of this heritage, whilst the interior architecture traces building styles through the centuries. Several medieval details remain, complimented by gothic revival elements which speak to the enduring appeal of the Middle Ages.

Afterwards, we will continue to St Etheldreda’s, a 13th century church with an ancient crypt and beautifully preserved medieval architecture, along with several other points of interest.

Finally, there will be an opportunity to visit St John’s Priory’s cloister garden which has been designed to evoke its medieval medicinal purpose. Nearby there is the Museum of the Order of St John which is full of interesting artefacts for those who would like to see them, and the church’s 12th century crypt will be open in the afternoon.
