Fashion and power were inextricable in the royal court of pre-Revolutionary France. From the strategic rise of the luxury industries under the charismatic King Louis XIV, to the extravagance and vilification of Queen Marie-Antoinette a century later, this talk explores how the intrigues of the French sartorial culture intersected with larger cultural, political and economic forces.
