About the Event

Turbulent times can produce great art. Few twentieth artists demonstrate this better than George

Grosz (1893-1959). Born in Berlin, Grosz served in the First World War and became a leading

member of Berlin Dada and New Objectivity. There is simply no better chronicler of Weimar

Germany than Grosz who attacked the politics and the social disfunction of the period with biting

satire and mordant humour. Emigrating to the USA just before the rise of Nazism, Grosz escaped

from the German society he detested…and from the inspiration behind his greatest works.
