About the Event
John Everett Millais' astonishing artistic talent gained him entry to the Royal Academy schools at the age of 11 and he was set for a dazzling academic career. Â However at 19, he rejected this in favour of the aims of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, to look at the art made before Raphael.
The group was subjected to harsh criticism finding a supporter in John Ruskin.  Millais's relationship with Ruskin fractured after his love affair with Ruskin's young wife, which led to the end of the brotherhood.  Abandoning the precise technique of the PRB, Millais experimented with light before embarking on an academic career as a successful genre, landscape and  portrait painter, his painting "Bubbles" becoming one of the most recognisable images of Victorian England.
