About the Event
With a new generation of artists coming of age after the French Revolution, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres was keen to impress Napoleon and the painting we are discussing today throws everything at it. Although 'Napoleon I on his Imperial Throne' was not a public commission, but Ingres' own invention, this painting very much reflects the cult of Napoleon and the iconography available to show off the legitimacy of a ruler. Powerful and pompous, this image remains one of the most powerful of emperor Napoleon to date.
