Often named in the same sentence as his contemporary Poussin as they are both distinguished exponents of the French classical baroque style, it was Claude who focuses on the study of nature and the exploration of light while minimizing the role humans play in this. more info below

About the Event

19/9/22:  Claude Lorraine (1600-82)

Indebted to the Netherlandish landscape artists that came before him, Claude developed a type of landscape that captured the truth and beauty of nature. Although he refrained from including the minute details of landscapes as seen in his Dutch predecessors, the French Claude created idealized interpretations of the landscape. Greatly influenced by the Italian Campagna and catering for a clientele who expected mythological and biblical stories, they illustrated an ideal landscape, recalling Arcadia, a legendary place in ancient Greece known for its quiet pastoral beauty.

Later followers in Britain like Constable will be discussed in a separate talk.

delivered by Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff
