About the Event

Holland’s most loved and best known painting, the Nightwatch is a masterpiece which captures all that is great about Rembrandt van Rijn as an artist.

When in 2013 the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam finally re-opened after a long refurbishment, the Nightwatch was carried through the streets of Amsterdam in a triumphant procession, with the queen of the Netherlands waiting for it at its doors and fireworks bursting out over the museum once it arrived.

No Rijksmuseum without its Nightwatch, no Dutch Golden Age without Rembrandt, and no master painter if not innovative and daring. After Rembrandt painted the Nightwatch in 1642, group portraits were never going to be the same again. Rembrandt challenges all our senses to be engaged, and his paintings radiate a dynamic and energetic force unlike other paintings, while at the same time blurring what is real and what is simply symbolic iconography.
