About the Event

In August 1661 Louis XIV attended a party given by his Superintent of Finances, Nicholas Fouquet.  Eager to impress the young King, Fouquet had built a house and garden at Vaux-le-Vicomte employing the architect Louis Le Veau, the garden designer Andre Le Notre and decorated by the artist Charles Le Brun which unified the disciplines and created the first perfect example of French classicism.  The result was the arrest of Fouquet and the elevation of Louis XIII hunting lodge outside Paris  into the Palace of Versailles using Fouquet's "dream team" and filled with magnificent objects, made in France which provided the backdrop for Court Ritual which spun around the Sun King.

Artists mentioned: Charles Le Brun, Jean Nocret, Hyacinthe Rigaud.
