About the Event
This exhibition explores the meticulous craft of Japanese carpentry, rooted in a deep respect for nature and the forests. Japanese joinery relies on precisely interlocking wooden pieces without nails or glue. This method, often involving complex, puzzle-like joints, allows for expansion and contraction of the wood, preventing cracks and ensuring longevity. These structures are known for their strength, durability, and ability to withstand earthquakes.
Japan House is showcasing the beautiful tools and craftsmanship behind Japan’s temples and shrines, with the centrepiece of the exhibition a life-size reconstruction of the Sa-an teahouse in the temple Daitoku-ji in Kyoto!
