• Medieval Art (28/2 and 6/3/20)

We haven't really covered much of the Medieval Period, other than as a general introduction to the period. It is therefore with great pleasure that we can welcome Emma Rose whose expertise is extensive and interesting. Please join her as she discusses themes and names we have all come across, but most of us don't actually know that much about!

Friday 28/2/2020 Van Eyck and Holman Hunt: an unexpected connection.

A consideration of van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait and what similarities can be found with Holman Hunt’s Awakening Consicence. The talk will look at the influence of Netherlandish art on the legendary British 19th-century brotherhood of artists – the Pre-Raphaelites and try and account for why it is usually assumed Italian Renaissance art, rather than that of the north was so influential on their art.  In particular, we will look at the detailed way in which the Netherlandish painters used the oil technique, which was profoundly influential for the way in which the PRB painted Nature. We will also do a close reading of each image.

6/3/2020 Doom paintings in English medieval art.

We will consider what is a Doom painting (based on the narrative of the Last Judgement in Matthew and Acts of the Apostles), we will then look at some examples of doom paintings in English parish churches, followed by a case study on the Wenhaston doom painting in Suffolk. The talk will try and work out why this subject was considered such an appropriate one in the parish church.
