The Nativity Scene in Art
The Christmas story and the scene of the nativity are for most people familiar parts of our end of year rituals. Strangely enough, however, the way in which the nativity scene has been represented in the arts can be remarkably different. Was Christ born in a stable, Ancient Roman temple, or a cave? Who were present at his birth? And why is Jozef sometimes only to be found in a shady hidden part of the scene?
In this lecture we will look at the differences between these scenes and how it developed over the centuries.
