About the Event

Few artists have become so closely associated with their home and have done so much to shape the concepts of that place for other people, as Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. His popularity with British Grand Tourists was such that he was persuaded to travel to London to work there.

Canaletto lived and worked in London for about nine years, from 1746 to 1755, where he painted views of the city and country houses. While in London, he primarily painted the River Thames and its surroundings, creating about 50 paintings that showed an idealized, dramatic view of the city. His work in England included depictions of places like Westminster Bridge, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Greenwich Hospital, and he is commemorated by a blue plaque at his former home, 41 Beak Street.
