About the Event

John Constable (1776-1837)

This final week in our series of Masters of Landscape painting, we will be focusing on one of Britain's greatest landscape artists: Constable. Working at the dawn of a new era when love for nature itself and its awe-inspiring beauty and force were hugely important for artists and writers, Constable captured the meaning of nature during the changing world of the industrial revolution.

Although he battles in popularity with Turner, both artists for all their differences (and there are plenty), were hugely transformative in their own right within the canon of art and together they inspired the next generation of great landscape artists: the Impressionists; Constable with his truth-telling and fluent, responsive brushwork; Turner with his light and acute awareness of contingency. (But that is for a future series!)

It is Constable however who creates the bridge between the past (Ruisdael and Claude Lorraine) and the future (Barbizon School) in his geographically realistic renderings of his landscapes, making his paintings timeless pieces on the beauty of and affection for nature.
