About the Event
No longer perceived as the sole domain of the male rebel, the European avant-garde is now recognised as an arena of opportunity for female artists, patrons and critics. With a focus on the city of Munich in the years immediately preceding the First World War, this lecture explores the pivotal role played by two outstanding women in the founding of German Expressionism.
Coinciding with the current exhibition on the art of Gabriele Münter at New York’s Guggenheim Museum, it interprets her work and that of her close colleague Marianne von Werefkin as the very definition of the Expressionist tendency.
