About the Event

Artist, brewer and innkeeper, Jan Steen knew a thing or two about people misbehaving. His comical scenes of dissolute households, merrymakers at inns, quack doctors and lovesick girls make us both laugh as well as give us a mirror of our own moral behaviour. He often included himself in his paintings, poking fun at himself and showing no one is above some insight into our own shortcomings.

Join Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff in partnership with the New York Adventure Club.

this virtual lecture will feature:

· An introductory to the biography of Jan Steen, his education, life and aspirations

· Steen’s comic genre, but also his occasional portraits and history scenes (usually of a traditional biblical theme)

· The importance of humour in Dutch 17th century art and life
