About the Event

European society and culture changed dramatically in the mid-18th century. This was an age

of opportunity and change, enlightenment and innovation; it was also a period of great

cultural mobility between Britain and Europe. Few artists have defined an era as clearly as

William Hogarth , the so-called father of British painting, who became famous for paintings

and prints which captured that new modern experience with energy, humour and irony.

Across Europe too, artists were creating vivid portrayals of contemporary life in narrative

paintings which embraced the many contradictions of society. Tate Britain’s exhibition,

Hogarth and Europe (November 3,2021 to March 20 th ,2022) presents Hogarth’s work in a

fresh light, seen alongside works by his European contemporaries. Cindy Polemis, explores

the artistic exchanges, and investigates how Hogarth and artists across Europe captured

the new social, philosophical and economic ideas of the 18 th century in unforgettable visual

social commentaries which still resonate today.
