European society and culture changed dramatically in the mid-18th century. This was an age
of opportunity and change, enlightenment and innovation; it was also a period of great
cultural mobility between Britain and Europe. Few artists have defined an era as clearly as
William Hogarth , the so-called father of British painting, who became famous for paintings
and prints which captured that new modern experience with energy, humour and irony.
