About the Event

This talk offers an engaging introduction to the life and career of James McNeill Whistler, one of the most innovative and controversial artists of the nineteenth century. Tracing his journey from his early years in America to his rise within the artistic circles of Paris and London, it will explore how Whistler developed a distinctive aesthetic that challenged conventional ideas about the purpose of art.


The talk will then turn to a close examination of several of his most significant works, including paintings such as Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1 (Whistler's Mother), Nocturne in Black and Gold, and Symphony in White No.1. Through these case studies, we will consider Whistler’s radical approach to composition, colour, and atmosphere, as well as his deep interest in music, and the broader theoretical and philosophical questions his work raises.
