About the Event

Often described as the first professional woman artist in Britain, Mary Beale (1633-99) produced an

impressive body of work in late seventeenth century London. In establishing herself as a leading

portraitist she was helped by no less than court painter Sir Peter Lely and by her husband Charles

who was acted as her manager and support, referring to her as ‘my dearest heart’. This lecture will

look at Mary Beale’s career, how she broke into a man’s world and how she can also be viewed as a

proto-feminist.
