Through paintings, sculpture, prints, photography, and contemporary works, this talk explores how artists have depicted moments of physical and psychological transformation—from gods becoming animals and humans becoming plants to the shifting of bodies and identities.

Drawing on some of the most compelling stories from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, we will consider enduring themes of desire, power, violence, beauty, loss, and renewal, and explore why these ancient tales have continued to inspire artists across centuries and cultures, from Titian, Caravaggio, and Bernini to Rodin, Brancusi, Magritte, and Louise Bourgeois.
