About the Event
Just as the world order was changed forever by World War I, so the art world was rocked by the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. Everything that seemed to make sense was turned on its head. On the one hand, art was pronounced dead; on the other hand, the world of dreams was thrown open to be explored. Dadaist and Surrealist art was not always a pretty sight but it was always extraordinary and revelatory - and, even in the modern world of computer-generated art and AI, it continuous to inform current art practise and reflect contemporary hopes, fantasies and anxieties. These sessions will explore the nature and history of Dadaism and Surrealism, reflecting on its relevance in its own time and today. One session will take the form of a lecture; the second session on 17/1 will take place at Tate Modern.
