The Laden Table: Goods, Global Trade, and the Dutch Still Life
Description
Pepper from Java, porcelain from China, sugar from Brazil, silver from the Americas, textiles from the East Indies — the objects crowding Dutch still life paintings are a map of global commerce in paint. This talk reads the still life tradition from the austere breakfast pieces of Pieter Claesz to the opulent pronkstillevens of Willem Kalf as a direct register of what Dutch trading networks had made possible — while never losing sight of the persistent moral unease that runs beneath these glittering surfaces, asking whether a society built entirely on getting and spending had perhaps lost its way.
