The Self Portraits of Artemisia Gentileschi
Fri, Nov 14
|Richmond Library Annexe, online & replay
Role model for female strength and making it in a man's world, her depictions are also about sisterhood. Artemisia used her art & likeness to show off her identity as a professional artist, to challenge traditional gender roles and to champion women's capabilities - especially when working together.

About the Event
Artemisia Gentileschi frequently incorporated self-portraits into her paintings, often depicting herself in various roles and guises, both in allegorical and religious contexts. Beyond dedicated self-portraits like Self-Portrait as the Allegory of Painting in the British Royal Collection, she frequently used her own likeness in other works. This practice was partly a way to showcase her artistic skill and partly a way to express her own identity and experiences as a woman in 17th-century Italy.
