About the Event

Discover the commonalities between ancient Greek sculpture, the rich paintings of the Renaissance, and the exquisite still lives of the Dutch Golden Age in this eight-week class with Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff. You’ll learn how to trace the evolution of various symbols and meanings found in works of art – from mythology, to shapes, to musical instruments, to animals. You’ll learn how your favourite artists, from Rembrandt to Goya to Titian, incorporated signals and symbols to convey meaning to their audience. You’ll explore ways to “read” a work of art – ways to discover the significance hidden in works across European art history. Beginning with ancient mythology and ending with a look at allegorical works of Renaissance artists, this class will provide a well of knowledge for you to draw on as you interpret works of art.

Jun 24th: Ancient Mythology

Jul 1st: Geometric Shapes

Jul 8th: Colours: Before synthetic pigments, paint…
