About the Event

Everyone knows the story of Vincent van Gogh who cut off his own right ear. There is a self portrait in the Courtauld Institute of Art in London showing Vincent with his bandaged ear.

Van Gogh made 35 (within the space of 3.5 years) other self portraits and it is because of these self portraits that many of us feel we know the man behind the wonderful paintings.

However, if we study the self portraits by Vincent van Gogh together, we realise they are all very different from one another. These self portraits tell the story of Van Gogh finding his own unique style as an artist. They show his immitation of others and his evolution to his highly personal and recognizable style, which would take the world by storm years after Van Gogh had long passed away.
