Rofayda Salem

Architect and Environmental Design Researcher

Rofayda Salem is an architect and environmental design researcher with a special interest in traditional Islamic architecture and its sustainable principles. She is currently completing her PhD at the University of Westminster, where her research focuses on reinterpreting the Mashrabiya as a climate-responsive ceramic cooling screen for hot, arid environments. Her work bridges cultural heritage, material innovation, and environmental performance, drawing on fieldwork in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Turkey. Alongside her academic research, Rofayda has worked as a heritage consultant on restoration and adaptive reuse projects across the Gulf region. She also lectures in architecture and environmental design, advocating for low-tech, culturally rooted approaches to climate resilience.
