Han embroidery has a long and distinguished past. This lecture will begin with some of the most famous examples, St Cuthbert’s stole and the Bayeux Tapestry before focusing on one of the high points of English embroidery, Opus Anglicanum, so special is was desired and acquired by Popes. We will look at some of the hallmarks of this remarkable work by professional embroiderers, men and women, before following the development of embroidery as a pastime when it was enjoyed by many of the Tudor Queens whether for leisure, for adornment or even political messages.
