About the Event

Flaming June: Masterpiece of Victorian Art

A familiar image, Flaming June has to be the most well-known work by Frederic, Lord Leighton.

Painted in 1895, the penultimate year of his life, it is said to be Leighton’s last completed painting

and a supreme example of the aesthetic movement. This lecture will look at Leighton’s career, how

the painting came about and the story of its acquisition…not by Leighton House, not by Tate Britain

but by Luis Ferré…of Puerto Rico. However, while its permanent home is being refurbished, we have

until 12 th January 2025 to see Flaming June at the Royal Academy in London.
