Frida Kahlo: Identity and Political Commitment
Frida's genes were half German & half Mexican. She could be considered a “mestiza”. Very proud of both her ancestries, as we can appreciate in her paintings, we'll go through her life from the point of view of her strong relationship with politics and Mexican traditions.

About the Event
Frida Kahlo was, like her husband the muralist Diego Rivera, strongly influenced by the strength and richness of Mexico’s pre-Columbian cultures, mainly by the Aztecs. Her identity, her oeuvre, her lovers, her look… Kahlo combined full skirts, embroidered blouses and elaborate hairstyles. These indigenous garments with other contemporary garments of her wardrobe, created a tension between her cross-cultural identity honouring both Mexican women and het European heritage.
You can still watch last week's lecture on The Aztec Mexica: Lords of all Created Things, which is a wonderful introduction to this lecture on Kahlo.
Previous lecture on Frida Kahlo by Maria: Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera - a volatile relationship, still available On Demand
