About the Event

Rachel Ruysch was the most successful still life painter of the 17th and 18thcentury, producing large flower works for an international circle of patrons. She painted until she was in her 80s, while being the mother of 10 children, with her popularity never waning and her commercial success larger than Rembrandt, Vermeer or Frans Hals together!

Her paintings are carefully detailed, often enlivened with small creepy crawlies, lizards and birds, in beautiful colours and extremely true to life. No wonder that when she died, she was praised in poems and books, never seen before for a female artist.

Led by Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff this virtual museum tour will feature:

· An introductory to the biography of Rachel Ruysch, her renownded anatomist and botanist father, her marriage to the portraitist Juriaen Pool II, and her incredible personal talent

· Her membership as the female at the Confrerie Pictura, the artists’ society in The Hague

· The honours and support she received during her life time and after

· Life in Europe in the 17th century, and in particular in the Netherlands

· The role of women in the Netherlands

· The art market for still life paintings and her influence on this genre

Please note you will be re-directed to the New York Adventure Club webpage for booking. Booking will go life 3 weeks before the start of the talks/course. Payment can be done in any currency.
