About the Event

Jacob van Ruisdael was the most famous landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, who could turn the flat landscape of the Netherlands into majestic, brooding places of great beauty and drama. He created an incredible range of very diverse landscapes, which included seascapes and cityscapes, with astonishing technical virtuosity.

His work includes dynamic use of light and shadow, great depth and naturalistic details, and is seen as the foremost exponent of the Classical phase of Dutch landscape painting.

Led by Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff this virtual lecture will feature:

· An introductory to the biography of Jacob Isaacks van Ruisdael, artist and doctor (!)

· His varied oeuvre of landscapes, cityscapes and seascapes

· His travels to Germany and Scandinavia and the influence on his work

· Ruisdeal’s merging of fantasy and reality

· Life in Europe in the 17th century, and in particular in the Netherlands

· The art market in his native city of Haarlem and the role of his artist family, and his later years in Amsterdam

· The importance of his work on later landscape artists
