About the Event
This tour looks at the architecture and interior design of what has been described as the largest exhibit in the V&A’s collection, the buildings themselves. During the early decades following the establishment of what was then called the South Kensington Museum, the Victorians were intrigued by their growing understanding of science and its possible artistic interpretation. This creative tension between art and science proved to be a driving force behind what we can see today and many of the much visited areas of the museum are a result of experimentation and the desire the understand ancient techniques, for example the use of ceramics.
We visit the garden courtyard, the fantastic cafe and other secret corners of the museum to gain an understanding of the great Victorian desire to show the art of what is possible and how they were inspired by the Great Exhibition of 1851.
