About the Event
Milton Avery (1885-1965) was one of the most influential American colourists of the 20th century, inspiring a generation of Abstract Expressionist artists such as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman. His bright coloured canvases, depicting landscapes and scenes of everyday life, balance harmonious palettes of colour, creating a visual poetry. In the USA, Avery has been long regarded as a great American colourist, yet in the UK July 2022 will mark the very first comprehensive exhibition of the artist in Europe, held at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Ahead of the upcoming Royal Academy exhibition in July 2022, in this talk, former Assistant Curator at the Royal Academy Isabella Boorman, explores the colourful life and art of Avery, following research and a text on the artist’s chronology for the exhibition catalogue.
