About the Event
The Enlightenment is understood as the triumph of scientific enquiry over mysticism and tradition. Across Europe philosophers, writers, intellectuals and scientists sought to understand the world around them through observation and experimentation. This talk will look at how these changes impacted on the art. We will look in detail at Joseph Wright of Derby’s An Experiment on a Bird in an Air Pump as the most complete visual presentation of the ideals, and problems, of the Enlightenment.
