Van Gogh's Self Portraits: A Life Story Told Through the Brush

Within the space of just 3.5 years, Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh created 35 self portraits that might be hard to differentiate upon first glance. However, take a closer look and you'll realize that not only are they all very different from one another, but they tell the story of a troubled and intense artist trying to discover his own unique style. How exactly do these self-portraits demonstrate how his art evolved from pure imitation to a signature style that would take the world by storm years after his passing? It's time to uncover the life story of van Gogh through the man he saw in the mirror.

Join us as we explore the life and legacy of Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) through his collection of 35 self-portraits, which forever propelled art history into a radical new direction.

Led by Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff in partnership with the New York Adventure Club, this virtual review of Vincent van Gogh’s self portraits will include:

• A brief overview of van Gogh's life story, from his early struggling years trying to figure out what his calling was to his final years in Southern France as an artist
• A chronological review of his self-portrait art painted mostly during his time living in Paris between 1886-1888, and how he tried to rethink and revitalize figure painting through different styles, themes, and subjects
• An introduction to the styles and inspirations on his work, from the The Hague School of Art and Pointillism to Japanese woodblock printing and Impressionism
• His importance within the canon of art history and how his art evolved into one that used colors and lines more arbitrarily in order to express himself more forcefully
