Forced conversions, expulsions & the Inquisition carried out in the name of the Catholic Church required powerful religious images highlighting the suffering of Christ & His martyrs. This provided significant opportunities for artists like ElGreco, Zurbaran, Ribera, Sanchez-Cotan and Fernadez.
